Flight Suit Costume for Halloween - 06
After a trip to the fabric store, in which I got just about everything I needed, except for the flight suit. That was purchased from a military surplus store in Tyson's Corner, VA.
The silver material is actual silver PVC, which I didn't actually think I'd find. I looked all over ABQ for it, and failed to find anything even remotely close.
Refer to the picture of
Sharon and Helo if you're confused about what that's for.
The material that looks orange in the picture is actually a shiny bronze that will work to do the scales along the back of the suit.
To do the grommets, I actually got snaps, and that way I can snap the wrist/ankle cuffs into the suit, thereby making it still washable. Don't know how I"m going to do all the other PVC detail though. I'll figure that part out later ;)
I also got two side lock snap fasteners for the front vest-like thing, and the strapping for them, but I sort of need to find something that resembles that material. It looks like car upholstery! HA! Maybe I should hit Auto Zone.
The hardest thing I had to do was create a pattern for the scales on the back of the suit.
I started with newspaper, and went through about five sheets before finally chucking the idea and making use of the parchment I bought to do baking last Halloween.
It worked MUCH better. And once I got the top detail done, it was pretty much free handing. The top one was the worst, cause I wanted it to match up with the suit exactly.
So, there are all the pieces. It looks crooked in the picture, but thats just the way its hanging.
There's all the pieces ready to be cut out. Once I cut them out, I had to hem around the edges to keep them from fraying.
Ta da!!
Now I just have to sew them on. Still debating whether to do that before or after I paint the suit. Seems like it might be difficult to sew it after its painted, but I dont know.
I thought PVC would be hard to sew, and the exact opposite turned out to be true. It was seriously the easiest thing ever. No bunching, no folding at the wrong time, nothing. It was SO flipping easy.
See, this is where you marvel at how clever I am.
The cuffs don't have to be stuck on all the time. They snap onto the wrists and ankles.
They needed to have the snap detail anyhow, so I figured, wtf. I'll just snap them on, so I don't have to sew them. That way I can pull them off to wash it. Although, with the fantastic PVC detail I'm about to add all over the suit, it may be not quite that clever. I'm considering having those pieces snap in, too. But that would look different than it should, so I'll probably sew them.
I got the scales put onto the back of the suit, which was a complete pain in the ass. Took me forever to line them up even, despite the fact that I had a seam running right down the middle of the back of the suit.
I went shopping on Saturday, and managed to find a cheap pair of basketball shoes, which are closer to what
the pilots on the show actually wear.
I painted them up, and they actually look pretty cool, except for that glaring NBA logo.
Also, on Friday, I found some fantastic fake leather to use for the front vest, and started work on that. The details around the edge are the same silver PVC.
The two pieces off to the side are go on top of those pieces, and attach to the top of the suit at the shoulder with a set of snaps.
The two parts that come out the most toward each other will be connected with straps and side lock buckles, and another strap will go around the waist in the back. :)
